The archaeologists from the Mentor Shipwreck Excavation Programme team plan on using laser scanning in the following ways (verbatim):
- in the study of the ship’s hull and rigging
- in the study of the site formation processes
- in the study of the ship’s cargo distribution
- in the study of the ecological impact of the wreck site
- in the study of potential cultural technology & communication endeavors (there is already a VR serious game app that is being developed
- in the study of scientific diving procedures (i.e., the use of robotic devices along with divers)
Underwater archaeology has evolved considerably over its short history with its beginnings in the mid-twentieth century. Initially, tape measures, depth gauges, and hand sketching were used for surveying a site.
